NEW DELHI – Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi was among several prominent politicians detained in the capital on August 11, 2025, as police blocked a protest march to the Election Commission headquarters over alleged irregularities in Bihar’s electoral rolls. The demonstration, led by the INDIA bloc alliance, accused authorities of attempting to disenfranchise millions of poor and marginalised citizens through the Special Intensive Revision of voter lists.
The march began outside Parliament but was halted near Transport Bhawan, where police erected heavy barricades. Witnesses said tensions escalated when leaders, including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, attempted to push through the barriers. Rahul Gandhi condemned the police action, calling the protest “a fight to save the Constitution” and demanding a transparent and fair voter list.
Senior figures such as Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, NCP leader Sharad Pawar and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also participated, underscoring the scale of political opposition to the changes. The protest follows a nationwide campaign by Congress accusing the government of orchestrating “vote theft” and launching a public portal to gather complaints about alleged electoral roll manipulation.
