NEW DELHI – In a striking political statement, Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has endorsed former US President Donald Trump’s recent remark that the Indian economy is “dead,” intensifying criticism against the Narendra Modi government.
Speaking outside Parliament, Gandhi stated, “Everybody knows this except the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister,” accusing the ruling BJP of economic mismanagement and cronyism. He cited demonetisation, a flawed GST rollout, and failed industrial initiatives as evidence of India’s financial decline under Modi’s leadership.
Trump, during a recent speech, had not only declared India’s economy “dead” but also announced a 25% tariff on Indian goods starting August 1, blaming India’s trade practices and ties with Russia.
Rahul’s comments have stirred unrest within his own party. Leaders like Shashi Tharoor and Priyanka Chaturvedi distanced themselves from his remarks, suggesting that the economy, while facing challenges, is far from “dead.” Meanwhile, the BJP slammed Rahul’s statement as an act of undermining national interests on a global stage.
As India braces for potential trade repercussions and growing political tension, the debate over economic direction and leadership intensifies.
