DOHA: The State of Qatar has strongly condemned Iran’s recent missile strike targeting the Al-Udeid Air Base, which hosts U.S. and allied forces. The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs termed the attack a direct violation of the country’s sovereignty and reserved the right to respond under international law.
According to Qatari officials, nine out of ten missiles launched by Iran were intercepted by air defense systems. No casualties or structural damage were reported at the military base or in nearby civilian areas.
The missile barrage was part of Iran’s broader retaliation following U.S. airstrikes on its underground Fordow nuclear facility. The attack on Al-Udeid marked a significant escalation, drawing Qatar directly into the evolving regional crisis.
Official Statement
In a formal statement, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Dr. Majed Al-Ansari stated:
“Qatar strongly condemns the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s attack on Al-Udeid Air Base and considers it a breach of Qatari sovereignty and a serious threat to regional stability.”
He further emphasized that Qatar reserves the right to respond, proportionate to the scale and nature of the attack, in full accordance with international law.
Regional Implications
The missile strike has heightened regional tensions, with multiple Gulf states expressing concern over the possibility of broader military conflict. Qatar temporarily closed its airspace and issued advisories urging residents and foreign nationals to exercise caution.
Diplomatic sources indicate that Qatar has begun consultations with regional allies and the United Nations to discuss next steps and possible de-escalation measures.
Strategic Importance
- Al-Udeid Air Base is a strategic facility hosting U.S. Central Command and is central to counterterrorism operations and military logistics in the Middle East.
- Qatar’s strong reaction underscores its determination to protect national territory and avoid being drawn further into a regional confrontation.
Efforts are underway among key international stakeholders to contain the fallout and prevent further military action in the Gulf.
