LAHORE: With tensions simmering ahead of planned demonstrations, Punjab Inspector General of Police Dr Usman Anwar has issued a firm warning that no group or individual will be allowed to take the law into their own hands or disrupt public order.
The statement comes as Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) and Tanzeemat-i-Ahle Sunnat announced protest plans in Lahore, including gatherings near Data Darbar and calls for a judicial inquiry into the Muridke operation, where police reportedly cleared a protest camp earlier this week.
The IG, in an official message shared on the Punjab Police’s X (formerly Twitter) account, emphasised that the protection of citizens and property remains the government’s top priority. He asserted that any attempt to incite unrest or violate the peace would be met with decisive and impartial action.
Authorities have also imposed Section 144 across Punjab for two days, prohibiting large public gatherings. Security has been tightened in major cities, with thousands of police personnel, anti-riot units, and intelligence teams deployed to prevent any potential violence.
Officials clarified that while peaceful demonstrations are a democratic right, any move that threatens public safety or attempts to exploit religious sentiments will not be tolerated.
