LAHORE – In a massive emergency response, authorities have relocated nearly 150,000 residents from flood-prone areas in Punjab as heavy downpours and rising river levels triggered high-alert warnings across the province.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued early flood alerts, prompting the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) to initiate large-scale evacuations along the swollen Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab rivers. Among those evacuated were approximately 89,868 people from Bahawalnagar, 14,140 from Kasur, 2,063 from Okara, 873 from Pakpattan, 361 from Bahawalpur, and 165 from Vehari. Authorities noted an additional 40,000 had moved to safety shortly after the initial warning was issued.
Emergency response teams acted swiftly, placing all relevant departments on high alert. Residents were urged to steer clear of rivers, flood-prone areas, and unnecessary travel—all while following safety advisories issued through multiple communication channels.
This preventive relocation effort underscores the mounting threat of monsoon-related flooding across Punjab, the nation’s agricultural heartland, as authorities brace for escalating weather disruptions.
