ISLAMABAD — In a calculated political maneuver, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has nominated Mahmood Khan Achakzai, the seasoned Pashtun nationalist leader and chairman of Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP), as its backup candidate for the position of Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly.
This strategic decision follows the disqualification of Omar Ayub, PTI’s initial nominee, and reflects the party’s urgency to secure a strong parliamentary presence amidst intensifying political uncertainty. The move was reportedly finalized after direct instructions from PTI founder Imran Khan, currently incarcerated at Adiala Jail, who remains actively involved in key party decisions despite restrictions on meetings with lawyers and senior party members.
Sources within PTI revealed that Khan feared the government would expedite the appointment of a new opposition leader, leaving the party cornered if no alternate candidate was in place. “Khan Sahib wanted a robust backup plan to ensure the party maintains its influence in the National Assembly,” a senior party insider shared.
Who is Mahmood Khan Achakzai?
Achakzai, a veteran politician and outspoken critic of military interference in civilian affairs, commands significant influence in Balochistan and Pashtun-majority regions. He currently represents NA-266 (Killa Abdullah–Chaman) after his victory in the February 2024 general elections.
Once a strong critic of PTI during its tenure, Achakzai has recently aligned with Imran Khan, particularly after the formation of the Tehreek-e-Tahafuz-e-Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP) alliance — a coalition aimed at resisting establishment pressures and safeguarding constitutional governance. His reputation for resilience and sharp political acumen makes him a potent choice for the role, should PTI decide to activate the backup option.
What This Means for PTI
Analysts say this nomination is more than just a precautionary step. It reflects PTI’s commitment to maintaining a consolidated presence in parliament while reinforcing alliances with other opposition factions. “By keeping Achakzai ready, PTI is signaling that it will not allow the government to monopolize key opposition roles,” a political observer explained.
Party insiders, however, remain divided. Some believe the move strengthens PTI’s bargaining position, while others worry it could create internal rifts if Omar Ayub is eventually reinstated.
The Road Ahead
The next steps will depend on court proceedings surrounding Omar Ayub’s disqualification and the government’s pace in finalizing the opposition leadership. For now, PTI’s political committee continues to deliberate on whether to proceed with Achakzai’s nomination or hold out for Ayub’s legal vindication.
One thing is certain: PTI is playing a long game, balancing immediate tactical needs with broader strategic goals as the political climate grows increasingly charged.
