LAHORE – A local court on Tuesday granted bail to Sanam Javed, a prominent social media activist affiliated with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), in a case registered by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) under cybercrime laws.
Sanam Javed was arrested in April over allegations of sharing content deemed “anti-state” and “defamatory” toward national institutions on social media platforms. The FIA had registered a case under sections of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) and the Pakistan Penal Code, alleging that she was involved in spreading inflammatory posts online.
While opposing the bail, FIA prosecutors argued that the activist’s posts were part of a deliberate campaign to malign state institutions and disrupt public order. However, the court, after reviewing the case record and arguments from both sides, granted her post-arrest bail, citing insufficient evidence to justify continued detention.
The defense counsel maintained that the allegations were politically motivated and based on weak digital forensics. It was further argued that the content in question had not been conclusively linked to her verified accounts.
Sanam Javed has faced multiple legal challenges over the past year and has previously been arrested in cases related to political gatherings and protest activities. This bail order marks a significant legal relief for her, although proceedings in other cases reportedly remain ongoing.
The court has instructed her to cooperate with ongoing investigations and refrain from making any public statements that could influence the legal process.
