LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek‑e‑Insaf (PTI) has finally put an end to its internal leadership turmoil in central Punjab, with the reinstatement of Ahmad Chattha as president and Bilal Ejaz as general secretary. The move comes after a written directive from the party’s secretary‑general, bringing temporary relief to the organisation ahead of upcoming provincial mobilisation efforts.
The decision was formalised through a notification stating: “Pursuant to written instructions received from PTI Secretary‑General Salman Akram Raja, conveyed under the authority of founding chairman Imran Khan, Ahmad Chattha and Bilal Ejaz are restored to their previous positions with immediate effect.”
The crisis had erupted two weeks ago when PTI’s chief organiser in Punjab, Aliya Hamza, issued notifications removing Chattha and Ejaz and appointing replacements. The move was openly contested by Imran Khan through his sister, Uzma Khan, highlighting a clash between the chief organiser and secretary‑general over provincial leadership authority.
Following consultations, Secretary‑General Raja announced that a review committee meeting on Nov 7 had unanimously decided to restore Ahmad Chattha as central Punjab president. Hamza later confirmed that the reinstatement was executed under the secretary‑general’s direction, rendering her previous notifications null and void.
Hamza’s latest communication emphasised that the restoration aligns with the chain of command and the strategic vision of Imran Khan, who continues to exert influence despite his incarceration. She noted that no further notification was necessary, as the leaders were simply reinstated to their former roles.
The resolution ends a significant chapter of PTI infighting in Punjab, but the episode has exposed underlying tensions regarding decision-making authority within the party and the influence of Imran Khan in shaping leadership dynamics. As PTI moves forward, organisational cohesion and clarity of authority will remain critical ahead of upcoming political activities.
