ISLAMABAD: The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has arrested PTI activist Falak Javed Khan in connection with a controversial video case involving Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari, reigniting debates over political rivalry and freedom of speech in the digital space.
According to her lawyer, Advocate Mian Ali Ashfaq, Falak was taken into custody late at night in Islamabad and will be presented before a Lahore district court. The defence has vowed to contest any request for physical remand, calling the allegations politically motivated and insisting the case requires a fair and transparent hearing.
The arrest follows a petition filed by Azma Bokhari last year, accusing the PTI activist of circulating doctored and objectionable videos that allegedly damaged her reputation. The minister had sought legal action under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), pressing the authorities to investigate and prosecute those behind the campaign.
Reports indicate that Falak has previously faced multiple FIRs linked to online content, including charges of defamation against state institutions. Her father has now approached the Islamabad High Court, demanding her immediate production and clarity on the charges.
The development has sparked criticism from PTI, which condemned the arrest as a clampdown on its workers and a violation of free expression. Supporters argue that online political activism is being criminalised, while opponents stress the need to hold individuals accountable for spreading malicious or indecent content.
With the matter now before the courts, the case is expected to test the balance between cybercrime regulation, personal reputation, and political freedoms in Pakistan’s highly polarised environment.
