ANKARA – A strong earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck western Türkiye on Sunday evening, sending tremors across multiple provinces and sparking fear among residents.
According to the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the quake hit near the town of Sındırgı in Balıkesir province at a shallow depth of around 11 kilometres, amplifying its intensity. The tremor was felt as far as Istanbul and İzmir.
Authorities confirmed at least one fatality — an elderly woman who succumbed to injuries — while dozens of others were treated for trauma and minor wounds. Several structures, already weakened by earlier quakes, collapsed during the shock, prompting search and rescue operations.
Residents rushed out of their homes as aftershocks rattled the region throughout the night. Emergency response teams have been dispatched to assess damage and ensure relief efforts in affected districts.
