The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted scorching heat across much of the country during Eidul Azha, issuing a heatwave alert valid from June 7 to 12.
A high-pressure system is expected to push temperatures 5 to 7°C above normal in central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Meanwhile, southern Punjab, upper Sindh, and parts of Balochistan will see 4 to 6°C above-average daytime heat.
Dust storms and gusty winds are likely on the plains, and rising temperatures in northern areas may accelerate snowmelt, raising flood risks during the monsoon season. Authorities have been urged to stay vigilant and prepare for potential heatwave-related emergencies.
PMD advises vulnerable groups—children, women, and the elderly—to avoid direct sunlight and stay hydrated. Farmers are also advised to adjust crop activities accordingly.
The alert comes amid warnings of increased rainfall and severe weather events this monsoon, with heightened chances of glacial lake outburst floods in northern Pakistan.
Meanwhile, the National Institute of Health (NIH) has called for strengthened hospital preparedness to manage heatstroke cases, highlighting Pakistan’s strained healthcare system amid rising climate challenges.
