KARACHI: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has assured Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) chief Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman that the government is making every effort to secure the release of former senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan and other Pakistanis detained by Israeli forces following the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla.
During a telephonic conversation with the JI leader, the prime minister revealed that Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has been tasked with leading Pakistan’s diplomatic outreach. Dar is said to be engaging with friendly nations and international organisations to press for the safe return of all detained Pakistanis.
The Prime Minister’s Office issued a statement reaffirming Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to the Palestinian cause, reiterating support for the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state on pre-1967 borders with Al-Quds as its capital. The assurance underscores Islamabad’s intent to align its foreign policy firmly with the principle of self-determination for Palestinians.
Meanwhile, the JI chief used the opportunity to criticise the 20-point US-backed peace plan, warning that any framework seen as reinforcing Israel’s position must not be endorsed by Pakistan. He pressed the government to adopt a stance that reflects the will of the people and stays true to Pakistan’s historic position on Palestine.
The issue has sparked growing debate both domestically and internationally, as pressure mounts on the government to act swiftly and decisively in the wake of the flotilla episode. Islamabad’s next moves will be closely watched, not only for their diplomatic effectiveness but also for their reflection of Pakistan’s broader policy towards the Middle East.
