ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif today unveiled a comprehensive New Energy Vehicle (NEV) policy aimed at revolutionizing Pakistan’s transportation sector while accelerating the shift toward greener automotive technologies.
The policy introduces significant incentives for electric and hybrid vehicle adoption, including reduced taxes, import relaxations, and specially crafted accreditation for eligible manufacturers. A suite of targeted subsidies and rebates will lower upfront vehicle costs, making eco-friendly alternatives more accessible to consumers.
Beyond supporting EV and hybrid uptake, the initiative focuses on fostering indigenous production. It promises incentives for local manufacturing—such as customs duty exemptions, streamlined regulatory approvals, and public-private partnerships. Simultaneously, investments will be directed toward establishing a widespread charging infrastructure, with emphasis on both urban hubs and strategic intercity corridors. Special development zones will be designated to host assembly units for energy-efficient vehicles.
Prime Minister Shehbaz stressed that the NEV policy is not only an environmental imperative but also a catalyst for economic transformation. He highlighted its potential to create employment, reduce fuel import dependence, and align Pakistan with international clean energy standards. The policy’s rollout marks a decisive shift in Pakistan’s industrial strategy, focusing on sustainable growth and reduced carbon emissions.
