ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced plans to establish a direct railway connection between the mineral-rich Reko Diq region in Balochistan and the Gwadar port by the year 2028, calling it a strategic step to unlock Pakistan’s economic potential.

Chairing a top-level meeting on infrastructure and mineral development, the Prime Minister stressed that the Reko Diq project should not exist in isolation. “This isn’t just about mining — it’s about creating long-term value through efficient transport and logistics,” he said.

The proposed railway line is expected to reduce travel distance, cut down on transport costs, and offer faster access to international markets via Gwadar. Officials were directed to expedite the necessary surveys, clear administrative hurdles, and ensure the project stays on a fast track.

Shehbaz Sharif also called for improved road connectivity in surrounding districts and emphasized the importance of sustainable development, local job creation, and coordination with private investors.

The Reko Diq copper-gold project, one of the largest of its kind, is expected to begin production in the coming years. Officials hope the planned railway connection will not only boost exports but also breathe new life into Balochistan’s underdeveloped areas.
