ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has praised former U.S. President Donald Trump for what he called a “unique and genuine contribution to peace,” following the Gaza Summit held in Sharm El-Sheikh, where world leaders moved toward an agreement to end hostilities between Israel and Hamas.
Speaking after the high-level talks, the prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to peace and justice in Gaza, expressing gratitude for Trump’s diplomatic engagement and mediation efforts. “We will continue to express our admiration for President Trump’s unique contribution to peace,” he wrote on X before returning home.
The summit brought together leaders from Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and the United States, aiming to cement a lasting ceasefire and facilitate humanitarian aid to Gaza. PM Shehbaz highlighted that Pakistan’s position had remained consistent — calling for an immediate end to the violence and unwavering support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.
During the closing ceremony, Trump acknowledged Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts and personally thanked PM Shehbaz and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir for their constructive roles in advancing dialogue. In response, Shehbaz described Trump as a “genuine man of peace” whose tireless efforts had “helped turn the tide of conflict into an opportunity for reconciliation.”
PM Shehbaz went on to suggest that Trump’s peacebuilding initiatives — not only in the Middle East but also in South Asia — merited international recognition, even nominating him for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Analysts view this diplomatic outreach as a strategic step by Pakistan to enhance its global image as a responsible actor advocating for stability, humanitarian relief, and peaceful conflict resolution. With Gaza’s truce now holding tentatively, Islamabad’s engagement is being seen as a rare moment of unity in an otherwise volatile region.
