ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has formally launched the “Apna Meter, Apni Reading” mobile application, a major step towards empowering electricity consumers to submit their own meter readings and reduce billing discrepancies.
The app, developed by the Ministry of Energy (Power Division), allows consumers to take and upload a photograph of their electricity meter during a designated reading period. The submitted image will be used to calculate the official bill, replacing the need for physical visits by meter readers in most cases.
Nationwide Rollout, Excluding K-Electric Areas
The initiative will be implemented across all electricity distribution companies except K-Electric. A phased rollout is planned, and the Power Division has been given one month to finalise implementation procedures.
The Prime Minister stated that the initiative aims to “eliminate unjustified billing practices, empower citizens, and promote transparency.” He also announced the removal of the Rs35 monthly PTV fee previously included in electricity bills.
Key Features of the App
- User Submission: Consumers can submit their own meter readings via photo.
- Language Options: The app is available in Urdu and four regional languages—Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto, and Balochi.
- Consumer Savings: Costs saved by reducing dependence on physical meter readers will be passed on to users.
Broader Reforms
The launch is part of a larger reform strategy targeting inefficiencies in the power sector. The government has already undertaken measures to restructure boards of electricity companies and crack down on power theft, which accounts for an estimated Rs500 billion in annual losses.
The Prime Minister also noted that electricity tariffs had been reduced by Rs7.50 per unit following successful negotiations with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and financial institutions.
A nationwide awareness campaign will soon be launched to educate users on the new system. The media drive will be supported by a dedicated budget and overseen by the Ministry of Information.
