KARACHI – Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) continues to hold the record for the fastest commercial flight in the world, more than six decades after a historic journey from London to Karachi set the aviation benchmark in 1962.

The record-setting flight was completed in 6 hours, 43 minutes, and 51 seconds aboard a PIA Boeing 720B, piloted by Captain Abdullah Baig. The achievement was certified by the Federation Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) and remains unbeaten to this day.

A Jet-Age Milestone

The Boeing 720B covered the London–Karachi route at an average speed of 938.2 km/h (582.98 mph), making it the fastest passenger flight between the two cities. PIA had introduced jet aircraft into its fleet just two years earlier, becoming the first Asian airline to operate jets.

PIA’s entry into the jet age was marked by bold decisions and rapid expansion, positioning the airline among the world’s most innovative carriers during the 1960s and 1970s.

Legacy of Firsts

In addition to the 1962 speed record, PIA became the first non-Communist airline to fly to China in 1964. It was also among the first to induct the Boeing 777-200LR and operated one of the world’s longest non-stop commercial flights from Hong Kong to London in 2005.

At its peak, PIA trained global airline crews, maintained a respected engineering division, and served as a model for developing-world carriers.

Record Remains Untouched

Despite advances in aviation technology, the 1962 record remains intact. Analysts attribute this to changing industry priorities, where fuel efficiency and environmental regulations now take precedence over speed in commercial aviation.

Modern aircraft such as the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350 offer long-range performance but are not optimized for record-breaking speeds.

Challenges and Restructuring

While PIA faces operational and financial challenges today, the airline is undergoing a restructuring process led by the Government of Pakistan. Privatization efforts are underway, and multiple bidders are in discussions for strategic investment in the national carrier.
