ISLAMABAD – Pakistan: Pakistan is preparing to launch its first Chinese-built submarine in 2026 as part of a multibillion-dollar defence collaboration aimed at strengthening maritime security and advancing technological self-reliance.
The project, estimated at around $5 billion, includes the delivery of eight advanced submarines—four to be constructed in China and the remaining four in Pakistan through a technology transfer programme. Defence officials described the initiative as a major milestone in the Pakistan Navy’s modernisation plan, significantly enhancing its underwater warfare and surveillance capabilities.
The submarine deal also highlights the expanding strategic partnership between Islamabad and Beijing, particularly in defence and naval cooperation. Analysts believe the timely completion of the project will play a key role in maintaining balance within the region’s maritime landscape.
