MOSCOW – In a significant development reflecting deepening bilateral ties, Pakistan and Russia have reaffirmed their commitment to enhanced cooperation in areas including security, counter-terrorism, energy, and media, with both nations describing each other as “natural allies.”
During a high-level meeting between Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Russian Ambassador to Pakistan Albert Khorev, both sides expressed satisfaction over growing collaboration and agreed to reactivate the Pak-Russia anti-terrorism dialogue, with upcoming exchanges planned in Islamabad and Moscow.
Media Collaboration to Counter Disinformation
Both governments agreed on the need for a unified media strategy to combat disinformation and fake news. The officials announced plans for collaborative programming between state broadcasters and media training initiatives, with the goal of promoting factual reporting and strengthening digital communication across borders.
Security and Counter-Terrorism Dialogue
Interior Minister Naqvi reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to working closely with Russian counterparts in security and intelligence sharing. The upcoming dialogue will focus on joint efforts to tackle transnational threats, including terrorism and narcotics trafficking.
Expansion in Energy and Trade Sectors
Russia also expressed strong interest in expanding cooperation in the oil and gas sector, including discounted crude supplies, offshore exploration, and long-term energy partnerships. Pakistan, facing ongoing energy challenges, welcomed the proposals and expressed its intent to move forward with mutually beneficial projects.
Strategic Shift in Bilateral Relations
This latest engagement signals a broader strategic shift, with Islamabad and Moscow moving away from Cold War-era perceptions and fostering defence, energy, and regional cooperation. Both countries continue to align their foreign policy goals through platforms such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
