TIANJIN – At the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called for a “comprehensive and structural dialogue” on unresolved regional issues, including the contentious Indus Waters Treaty, signaling Pakistan’s frustration with India’s unilateral suspension of the agreement.
Shehbaz emphasised that uninterrupted access to Pakistan’s due share of water under existing treaties is vital for regional cooperation. The Prime Minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to diplomacy, urging SCO member states to lead efforts in resolving all outstanding disputes—a step he said would enable mutual dividends as soon as possible. This appeal comes amid Pakistan’s reaffirmation of respect for international and bilateral treaties despite recent unilateral moves.
The address also touched on Pakistan’s ongoing battle with devastating floods fueled by torrential rains. Shehbaz expressed gratitude for international solidarity, especially China’s support during the crisis, and praised his country’s resilience in the face of widespread infrastructure and agricultural damage.
