ISTANBUL — Mediators from Turkey and Qatar are holding crucial discussions with Afghan Taliban representatives in Istanbul after Pakistan presented a detailed list of demands to halt cross-border terrorism.
Islamabad’s delegation has urged the Taliban to take concrete measures against the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), insisting on verifiable action and a formal commitment to stop militant incursions. Sources said the mediators have acknowledged Pakistan’s evidence-based stance and are working to bridge gaps between both sides.
The talks follow weeks of escalating border tensions and violent skirmishes that left several dead on both sides. Pakistan has accused the Taliban of providing sanctuary to TTP militants, a charge Kabul continues to deny.
Officials describe the discussions as “intense but constructive,” noting that while some progress has been made, a lasting agreement will depend on the Taliban’s willingness to enforce security guarantees and restrict militant operations along the frontier.
