ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s federal government has officially banned Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997, following the federal cabinet’s unanimous approval of the move.
The Interior Ministry’s notification stated that there were “reasonable grounds to believe” the group was involved in activities linked to terrorism and violent agitation. The decision follows a wave of nationwide demonstrations and violent clashes during recent Gaza solidarity protests, which resulted in multiple casualties among civilians and police.
Officials clarified that the move does not target the party’s religious beliefs but its repeated use of mass protests and street blockades to exert political pressure — actions that have routinely disrupted public order and national security.
Under the new designation, TLP’s offices, assets, and gatherings will face immediate restrictions, with its financial channels and public operations under federal scrutiny. The government is also expected to submit a reference to the Supreme Court of Pakistan within fifteen days, as required by law.

to building a just, prosperous world through multilateralism and diplomacy. He noted that as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2025-26, Pakistan was uniquely positioned to uphold the UN Charter’s principles of state sovereignty, non-interference and peaceful dispute settlement.
Dar highlighted the country’s long history of active engagement with the UN, citing decades of peacekeeping contributions and its hosting of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) since 1960. He acknowledged that while the ideals of international law and self-determination are under strain, particularly in Jammu & Kashmir and Gaza, Pakistan remains committed to collective action.
Emphasising partnership over polarisation, Dar called for stronger, inclusive multilateral institutions to address today’s crises—from climate change to inequality—and reiterated Islamabad’s readiness to work with the global community to make the UN Charter’s promise a reality.
