ISLAMABAD – Pakistan has nominated former US President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, citing his role in helping ease recent tensions between Pakistan and India. The decision has sparked criticism at home and abroad.
Officials say Trump’s diplomatic efforts contributed to a ceasefire between the two nuclear neighbours after clashes in May.
The nomination, supported by the Foreign Office and reportedly backed by military leadership, was presented by Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
However, criticism grew after Trump ordered airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites a day later. Pakistan condemned the strikes as a breach of international law.
Protests erupted, and analysts questioned the timing of the nomination amid escalating US military action.
India rejected third-party mediation, saying the ceasefire resulted from bilateral talks.
Observers say Pakistan’s conflicting stance—praising and condemning Trump within days—reflects its delicate diplomatic balancing act in the region.
