BEIJING – Pakistan and China have agreed to enhance joint media cooperation aimed at countering fake news and disinformation, following a high-level meeting between media officials and government representatives from both countries.

The agreement includes steps to deepen collaboration between Pakistan Television (PTV) and China Central Television (CCTV), as well as between state-run news agencies such as APP and Xinhua, with a focus on promoting factual narratives, cultural exchanges, and coverage of bilateral initiatives like the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Key Areas of Collaboration

  • Joint narrative building to tackle misinformation campaigns targeting Pakistan-China relations.
  • Content sharing in the form of documentaries, news bulletins, and feature reports that highlight mutual cooperation and development projects.
  • Training programs for journalists and technical staff from both countries to boost media professionalism and digital media resilience.

Media’s Role in Strategic Partnership

Pakistan’s Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar emphasised the importance of truthful storytelling in today’s digital landscape. He called for the translation of media collaboration into concrete actions, including influencer exchanges, co-productions, and public awareness campaigns.

The two sides also voiced concerns about the spread of “digital terrorism” and coordinated propaganda across social media, vowing to develop robust counter-narratives and fact-checking mechanisms.

Promoting Positive Coverage

During the discussions, Pakistani officials noted that Radio Pakistan, APP, and PTV have been actively working to highlight Pakistan’s views on CPEC and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), including dedicated Chinese-language programming and targeted coverage to reach broader audiences in China.

Looking Ahead

The joint media strategy is expected to expand further in the coming months, with new agreements on technical cooperation, talent development, and regional outreach. Officials believe the enhanced collaboration will help shape a more balanced and truthful global media environment.
