ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced that the government is prioritising the digitalisation of Pakistan’s economy, aiming to transition financial transactions toward a secure, cashless system. Speaking at a high-level review meeting on the cashless economy, the Prime Minister directed all provincial chief secretaries to fully support the federal initiative to expand the Raast digital payment platform down to the district level.
The Prime Minister expressed satisfaction over the progress made in implementing digital financial systems, highlighting that Pakistan is moving toward the creation of a comprehensive digital public infrastructure. This includes the development of digital IDs for every citizen, integrating national identity cards, biometric data, and mobile phone numbers to facilitate secure and efficient financial transactions.
Provincial governments have reportedly made significant strides in linking government-to-public and public-to-government payments with the Raast system. The meeting also noted that federal development agencies have provided the necessary rights of way for fibre connectivity, while ongoing discussions with Pakistan Railways and the National Highway Authority aim to further extend digital infrastructure across the country.
This digital transformation is expected to enhance financial inclusion, improve efficiency in public service delivery, and modernise Pakistan’s financial landscape, paving the way for a more transparent and accountable economy.
