ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Pakistan has joined more than 20 other countries in strongly rejecting Israel’s reported recognition of Somaliland, warning that the move violates international law and raises serious concerns about regional stability as well as potential implications for the Palestinian issue.
Islamabad, along with several Muslim-majority nations, issued a joint stance opposing any unilateral recognition of Somaliland, a breakaway region of Somalia that declared independence in 1991 but has not been recognised by the United Nations or the broader international community. The countries stressed that such actions undermine Somalia’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, principles firmly enshrined in international law and the UN Charter.
The joint position also dismissed and condemned any suggestion that the recognition of Somaliland could be linked to possible plans for the displacement of Palestinians, calling such ideas unacceptable and deeply troubling. The participating states reiterated that the Palestinian question cannot be resolved through forced relocation or political manoeuvring and reaffirmed their support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
Pakistan’s Foreign Office underscored that recognising breakaway regions without the consent of the parent state sets a dangerous precedent and could destabilise already fragile regions. Officials emphasised that peace and stability in the Horn of Africa require respect for internationally recognised borders and constructive diplomatic engagement rather than unilateral decisions.
The statement further urged the international community to uphold global legal norms and discourage actions that could fuel further tensions, both in Africa and the Middle East. Analysts note that the coordinated response reflects growing unease among many countries over moves perceived as politically motivated and destabilising at a time when multiple regions are already grappling with conflict and humanitarian crises.
