KABUL – Afghanistan: A powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan early Monday, killing at least 20 people and injuring more than 300, according to the Afghan health ministry.
The quake’s epicentre was reported near Mazar-e-Sharif in Balkh province, with tremors felt across neighbouring regions including Samangan and Kunduz. Rescue efforts are underway as authorities fear the death toll may rise due to ongoing aftershocks and limited access to remote areas.
Homes, schools, and historic buildings were damaged, with reports indicating parts of the famous Blue Mosque in Mazar-e-Sharif sustained structural cracks. Local hospitals are overwhelmed as emergency teams rush to treat hundreds of injured residents.
Afghanistan’s disaster management authority has deployed response units to assist with relief efforts, while humanitarian organisations are preparing to provide shelter and supplies to those affected.
Seismologists warn that the country’s mountainous terrain and vulnerable infrastructure make it particularly prone to earthquake devastation, especially as winter approaches.
