ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Cricket Board has officially appointed Shaheen Shah Afridi as the captain of Pakistan’s One‐Day International (ODI) side, replacing Mohammad Rizwan in a move that signals a bold leadership shift.
The decision was announced suddenly on Monday night, coinciding with the ongoing second Test against South Africa national cricket team. Afridi’s first assignment as skipper will be leading Pakistan in the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa in Faisalabad.
The move follows Rizwan’s earlier exit from the T20 captaincy after a disappointing campaign, prompting the PCB to turn to Afridi—who had previously been removed from T20 leadership—to helm a new direction in white-ball cricket.
With the appointment, the board emphasised Afridi’s pace, experience and leadership qualities as vital for Pakistan’s ambitions, especially ahead of global tournaments where the team aims to build consistency and challenge for honours.
