ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML‑N) has categorically denied circulating rumours that former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is set to become the country’s next president, dismissing them as “table stories” and speculative political chatter.
Party officials refuted suggestions of any such development, saying there are no internal discussions or decisions surrounding Sharif’s transition to a ceremonial role. They emphasised that his ongoing involvement is focused on parliamentary politics and that the presidency remains a constitutional position with a clearly defined path—none of which currently involve the party leadership.
The speculation emerged after informal media reports and social media commentary connected political shifts to the ruling coalition’s power dynamics. Observers noted that Sharif’s recent public appearances and influence within the party might have fed into the narrative. However, party insiders categorically rejected the notion, attributing the claims to baseless rumours and political mischief.
The denials follow a broader pattern of misleading speculation during a time of heightened political sensitivity, especially as upcoming elections and constitutional reviews fuel public debate. Analysts acknowledge that while the presidency is largely ceremonial in Pakistan’s parliamentary system, former leaders often draw attention to potential strategic moves—even if only as media fodder.
