KARACHI, Pakistan — A new public awareness initiative titled ‘Mera Layari’ has been launched with the aim of countering what organisers describe as misleading and negative propaganda surrounding Karachi’s historic Lyari neighbourhood.
The campaign seeks to present an alternative narrative by highlighting Lyari’s cultural richness, sporting legacy, and resilient community spirit, challenging portrayals that reduce the area to crime and disorder.
Responding to Controversial Depictions
Organisers said the initiative was introduced in response to recent media and entertainment portrayals that, according to them, misrepresent Lyari and reinforce harmful stereotypes. The campaign argues that such depictions ignore the area’s history, artistic contributions, and social diversity.
Community voices involved in the project stressed that Lyari has long been home to athletes, artists, and activists who have made significant contributions at both national and international levels.
Community-Centred Storytelling
The ‘Mera Layari’ campaign focuses on first-hand narratives, visual storytelling, and grassroots participation to reclaim the neighbourhood’s image. Supporters say the effort aims to empower residents by allowing them to tell their own stories rather than being defined by external narratives.
Local figures associated with the initiative said the campaign is not confrontational but corrective, seeking balance and context rather than denial of challenges faced by the area.
Cultural Identity and Representation
Advocates behind the campaign emphasised the importance of responsible representation in media and popular culture, arguing that distorted depictions can deepen social divides and stigmatise entire communities.
They said ‘Mera Layari’ is part of a broader effort to promote dignity, cultural pride, and accurate storytelling, while encouraging constructive dialogue about urban realities.
