KARACHI – Heavy monsoon rains returned to Karachi overnight, bringing fresh flooding to streets that had yet to dry from previous downpours. As water levels continued to climb, some key thoroughfares remained waterlogged, and the death toll tragically rose to eight.
City authorities reported that several areas, including low-lying neighbourhoods and parts of Korangi and Gulshan-e-Iqbal, experienced renewed inundation late last night. Drainage systems, still overloaded from earlier rain, struggled to cope with the new deluge. Commuters were forced to abandon vehicles as waters surged, particularly on main roads near the Malir River.
Emergency services swiftly resumed rescue efforts, deploying rescue boats and relief teams to evacuate stranded residents and assist motorists trapped in flooded zones. Hospitals and clinics across the city were put on high alert, as rainfall-affected individuals continued to seek medical attention responding to injuries and waterborne illnesses.
City engineers and municipal workers worked through the night to unclog drains, deploy pumps, and clear critical roadways. The Sindh Building Control Authority also issued fresh advisories urging residents to avoid travel unless necessary, especially in flood-prone areas. Public transport operators were instructed to suspend or modify routes that intersected with the worst-hit streets.
Residents expressed growing concern over the unpredictable and harsh nature of the monsoon, with many calling for a more robust flood management plan. As the rains persist, officials reiterated that vigilance and support from both government agencies and citizens are essential to minimise further loss of life and damage.
