MENLO PARK – Meta Platforms Inc. has announced a freeze on new hiring within its artificial intelligence (AI) division following months of aggressive recruitment of top global talent. The decision comes as part of a wider restructuring aimed at refining the company’s AI strategy and long-term ambitions.
Under the new framework, Meta has reorganised its AI operations into four units: one dedicated to superintelligence research, another focused on consumer AI products, a third handling infrastructure, and a fourth leading long-term exploratory projects. The restructuring falls under the newly formed “Meta Superintelligence Labs,” a move reflecting CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s vision of developing AI systems capable of surpassing human-level cognition.
Company officials have described the hiring pause as “basic organisational planning” linked to annual budget reviews and operational efficiency. Despite the pause, Meta’s recent hiring spree has drawn high-profile researchers and engineers from leading firms including Google DeepMind, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Apple, often with record-breaking compensation packages.
The freeze has raised concerns among investors over escalating costs tied to AI development, particularly stock-based compensation. However, analysts believe Meta remains strongly positioned in the global AI race due to its extensive infrastructure and ongoing research investments.
