NEW YORK – Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, the surprise winner of New York City’s mayoral primary, has responded to former US President Donald Trump’s remarks labelling him a “pure communist,” saying the attacks reflect a refusal to engage with the real issues facing Americans.
Mamdani defended his campaign platform, which includes proposals such as rent control, free public transport, a $30 minimum wage, and city-run grocery stores. He stated that his ideas are designed to support working families and ensure basic necessities are accessible, not to dismantle the private sector.
“The aim is fairness, not fear,” Mamdani told reporters. “If anything, these policies are a response to decades of neglect where corporate profits were prioritised over people’s needs.”
Trump, speaking at a campaign event, warned that a Mamdani-led New York would become “a communist city,” and suggested federal funding could be reconsidered if he were elected. The comments drew strong criticism from progressive leaders and civil rights groups, who accused Trump of using fear to stoke political divisions.
Despite a lack of endorsements from top Democrats, Mamdani’s grassroots support remains strong. Analysts say his campaign reflects growing discontent with status quo politics and rising interest in economic reform at the local level.
Mamdani dismissed the controversy by reiterating his commitment to the people. “We are here to serve the city, not scare it,” he said.
