Palma – Spain – Mallorca has suspended midfielder Dani Rodríguez and stripped him of the captaincy after he publicly criticized coach Jagoba Arrasate for being benched during the match against Real Madrid.
The 37-year-old, who has been with the club since 2018, took to social media to voice his frustration, suggesting that the coach’s decision marginalised loyalty and long-standing commitment. He questioned why a freshly signed player, Jan Virgili, who had just one training session, was chosen over him.
In response, the club issued a statement announcing the suspension of Rodríguez’s employment and salary along with the removal of his leadership role. His remarks were seen as undermining team unity and hierarchy.
This disciplinary action underscores escalating tensions within the squad as the season unfolds, and raises questions about the boundaries between player expression and team discipline.
