UNITED KINGDOM – HBO has officially commenced production on a new live-action adaptation of the beloved Harry Potter saga, set to unfold over a planned ten-year span. The inaugural season will comprise eight episodes, with filming already underway at the legendary Leavesden Studios, the very site where the original films were brought to life.
The series promises a faithful retelling of J.K. Rowling’s seven novels, with each season dedicated to one book. Esteemed writer Francesca Gardiner—known for her work on Succession and His Dark Materials—is spearheading the project as showrunner and executive producer, while seasoned director Mark Mylod oversees multiple episodes.
Lead roles have been cast with rising talent: Dominic McLaughlin takes on Harry Potter, supported by Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Veteran actors anchor the ensemble with John Lithgow portraying Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Hagrid. Additional key roles include Rory Wilmot’s Neville Longbottom, Amos Kitson’s Dudley Dursley, Louise Brealey as Madam Hooch, and Anton Lesser as wandmaker Ollivander.
Author J.K. Rowling remains intimately involved as an executive producer, offering guidance to preserve the authenticity of the original material without handling day-to-day production duties. The series is expected to debut in early 2027 and aims to captivate both loyal fans and new generations with deeper storytelling and richly realised magical elements not previously explored on screen.
