LEICESTER — Ruud van Nistelrooy has left his position as Leicester City’s first-team manager by mutual consent, the club confirmed today, following their relegation from the Premier League.
He joined Leicester in late November, signing a contract through 2027. Though he began with a promising debut win, results deteriorated sharply—Leicester suffered a record nine straight home defeats without scoring and ended the season 13 points adrift in 18th place. Van Nistelrooy managed just five Premier League victories in 27 matches.
The club said the decision came after internal assessments and that the current coaching staff will oversee preparations ahead of pre-season training from June 30. Search has already begun for a successor, with Sean Dyche emerging as the leading candidate alongside Danny Rohl and Michael Carrick.
Leicester also face off-field pressures, including possible penalties under Profit and Sustainability rules. The swift appointment of a new manager and clarity on the budget will be critical as they gear up for the Championship campaign.
Van Nistelrooy expressed gratitude to the club, staff, and fans while wishing Leicester well for the future.
