KARACHI – A charged and dramatic scene unfolded outside the Sindh High Court on Saturday as lawyers associated with the Karachi Bar Association launched a fierce protest against the recently approved 27th Constitutional Amendment. The demonstrators, chanting slogans and holding placards, denounced the amendment for allegedly infringing upon judicial independence by establishing a Federal Constitutional Court positioned above the Supreme Court.
The demonstration began as a peaceful rally but quickly escalated when police attempted to restrict movement near the courthouse entrance. Clashes broke out, resulting in pushing, shoving, and even torn uniforms as tempers flared. Several lawyers managed to breach the police cordon, forcing their way into the high court premises where the protest resumed with increased intensity.
Inside the bar hall, the lawyers continued their protest even after the power supply was cut, a move protestors claimed was aimed at suppressing their voice. Undeterred, they regrouped outside and continued demonstrations with renewed chants and resistance.
The 27th Amendment has sparked backlash from segments of the legal fraternity across Pakistan, who believe it weakens the independence of the judiciary and alters constitutional balance. Legal bodies have vowed to press on with further action until their demands are addressed.
