Moscow, Russia – Hopes for progress on ending the Ukraine conflict dimmed on Tuesday after the Kremlin confirmed that President Vladimir Putin’s high-level talks with senior US envoys produced no major breakthrough, despite lasting nearly five hours.
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov described the meeting as “constructive and useful,” but admitted that the two sides remained far apart on core issues — particularly territorial control, which continues to be the biggest obstacle in any peace framework. Moscow insists that Washington’s proposed plan does not adequately address Russia’s demands, especially regarding regions it claims to have incorporated.
The talks, attended by US envoy Steve Witkoff along with Jared Kushner, marked a significant diplomatic effort by Washington to revive stalled negotiations. Analysts had anticipated at least some movement toward a ceasefire or a framework for dialogue with Kyiv, but Moscow’s stance suggests the road to peace remains long and uncertain.
According to Russian officials, the US delegation pushed for deeper engagement on humanitarian corridors, de-escalation steps, and assurances for civilian protection. However, the Kremlin remains firm that any deal must recognize “new realities on the ground,” a reference to territories Russia captured during the conflict.
Diplomatic observers say the latest round of talks underscores the widening gulf between Moscow and Washington. With both sides publicly reaffirming their red lines, the chances of a near-term settlement appear slim. Some analysts also warn that the lack of progress may further prolong the war, increasing the humanitarian toll and deepening geopolitical tensions across Europe.
Despite the stalemate, both parties agreed to keep communication channels open, signaling a willingness to continue diplomatic engagement. But for now, the Kremlin’s message is clear: the latest talks did little to change the trajectory of the conflict.
