Peshawar, Pakistan — Government employees across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) staged fresh protests on Monday, taking to the streets to demand the restoration of the Old Pension System (OPS), intensifying pressure on the provincial government over retirement security concerns.
Large gatherings were witnessed in Peshawar and several other districts, where employees from various departments — including education, health, revenue and administration — marched with placards and chanted slogans against the contributory pension scheme. Protesters argued that the existing system fails to guarantee financial stability after retirement.
Demonstrators maintained that the Old Pension System had long ensured dignity and security for retired government servants, warning that its replacement has created uncertainty for thousands of families. “After decades of service, employees should not be left worrying about survival in old age,” protest leaders said while addressing the rallies.
The protests were organised under the banners of various government employees’ unions, which accused authorities of ignoring repeated appeals for dialogue. Union representatives warned that if their demands continue to be overlooked, the protest movement could expand into province-wide strikes and sit-ins.
Officials, on the other hand, have previously defended the new pension framework, citing financial sustainability and long-term fiscal reforms. However, employees argue that economic pressures, rising inflation and healthcare costs make the old system indispensable for retired workers.
Traffic disruptions were reported in parts of Peshawar as rallies passed through major roads, prompting authorities to deploy police personnel to maintain order. Despite the disruptions, the demonstrations remained largely peaceful.
Political observers believe the issue could evolve into a significant challenge for the provincial government, particularly as public sector employees form a substantial and influential segment of the workforce.
Protest leaders reiterated that their movement would continue until the government provides a clear and written commitment regarding the restoration of OPS, stressing that the demand is not just financial but also about honouring promises made to public servants.
