ISLAMABAD/KABUL – Pakistan has received a renewed assurance from Afghanistan’s Taliban government that Afghan soil will not be used for terrorist activities against its neighbours, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed during his official visit to Kabul.
Dar, speaking to reporters after a high-level meeting, said the Taliban leadership had promised strict action against any elements using Afghan territory to threaten Pakistan’s security. “We have been assured that such misuse of land will not be tolerated,” Dar stated.
The announcement comes at a time when tensions between the two nations have been running high following a surge in cross-border terror attacks, particularly from groups like the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Pakistan has long accused the Afghan side of providing safe haven to such elements — a claim the Taliban has repeatedly denied.
The talks also led to agreements on enhanced trade cooperation, border management, refugee issues, and launching a track-and-trace system to regulate cross-border transit by June-end.
Security experts have welcomed the renewed commitment but remain sceptical about its implementation, pointing out that previous assurances have failed to prevent deadly attacks inside Pakistan.
