ISRAEL / SYRIA – Israel has escalated its military campaign in Syria with a series of strikes targeting areas near Damascus and in the southern province of Sweida, where sectarian clashes have intensified between Druze groups and Sunni Bedouin tribes.
A drone strike carried out by Israeli forces reportedly hit the entrance of Syria’s defence ministry in Damascus, injuring at least two civilians. The attack was part of a broader offensive that also saw airstrikes targeting Syrian military convoys, including tanks and troop movements in the conflict-hit southern regions.
In Sweida, Druze fighters engaged in heavy exchanges of fire with Syrian government forces, as a recent ceasefire agreement collapsed. The area has witnessed a sharp rise in violence, with several fatalities reported among combatants and civilians. Syrian troops had been deployed to suppress the unrest, prompting retaliatory action from Israel, which cited the protection of vulnerable communities as justification for its intervention.
The Syrian government has condemned the strikes as a violation of its sovereignty, while Israel maintains that its actions are intended to prevent further bloodshed and preserve regional stability. The continuing violence underscores the complex dynamics of Syria’s internal conflict and the growing frequency of foreign military involvement.
