ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — The federal capital is set for a major infrastructure boost as authorities consider three prime locations for the construction of a new, state-of-the-art convention and expo centre aimed at enhancing Islamabad’s capacity to host large-scale national and international events.
Officials familiar with the matter said the Capital Development Authority (CDA), acting on directives from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, is evaluating multiple options to identify the most suitable site in line with the city’s master plan. The proposed project, tentatively titled the New Islamabad Convention, Expo and Exhibition Centre, is envisioned as a landmark facility capable of hosting international conferences, exhibitions, trade fairs and diplomatic gatherings.
The locations under consideration include land near the traffic office close to Faizabad, an area noted for its connectivity to major arteries of the city, a site adjacent to the Pakistan-China Centre that carries strategic and symbolic importance, and land next to the existing Jinnah Convention Centre, where shared infrastructure could improve operational efficiency. Authorities believe each site offers distinct advantages in terms of accessibility, visibility and long-term urban planning.
Sources said the project has already received in-principle approval, with an estimated cost running into tens of billions of rupees and a targeted completion timeline designed to ensure readiness well ahead of upcoming international engagements planned for Islamabad. The centre is expected to play a key role in positioning the capital as a regional hub for diplomacy, business and cultural exchange.
In addition to the main convention and expo facility, discussions have also included the possibility of developing supporting infrastructure such as a high-end hotel nearby to meet hospitality demands during major international events. Officials emphasised that public-private partnerships may be explored to attract investment and global expertise for the project.
Urban planners and business stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, noting that a modern convention and exhibition centre could significantly boost economic activity, tourism and Islamabad’s international profile. However, they stress that careful site selection and timely execution will be critical to ensure the project delivers long-term value to the city.
