TEHRAN – Iran has strongly criticised threats by European nations to reinstate United Nations sanctions through the snapback mechanism, declaring such actions baseless and contrary to international obligations. The Iranian government stated that Britain, France, and Germany no longer possess the legal authority to trigger this provision, given their past violations of the 2015 nuclear agreement. Iran reaffirmed that its reduction in commitments under the deal was a direct consequence of these breaches.
Iranian Foreign Ministry officials cautioned that any attempt to reimpose sanctions would receive a reciprocal and proportionate response. Tehran accused European states of using political pressure instead of constructive diplomacy, warning that such tactics would only escalate tensions and undermine the prospects of renewed negotiations.
The government further maintained that Iran remains committed to peaceful nuclear development and is open to cooperation with international regulatory bodies, provided its rights under international law are upheld. Iranian representatives also stated that the country’s nuclear programme continues to operate transparently and within defined legal frameworks, and that any deviation from this is a response to external threats.
