TEHRAN – Iran has vowed a strong response after the United Kingdom, France, and Germany announced the reimposition of United Nations sanctions under the “snapback” mechanism, a move Tehran described as “unjustified and illegal.”
The European powers activated the measure citing Iran’s nuclear activities and lack of full cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The sanctions are set to restore restrictions on arms sales, asset freezes, and controls on Iran’s ballistic missile program, with enforcement expected after a 30-day period.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi denounced the decision as a violation of international agreements, warning that Tehran would not remain silent. He cautioned that the sanctions would harm diplomatic engagement and could lead to the exclusion of European states from future negotiations.
Officials in Tehran stressed that the move undermines ongoing dialogue, insisting that Iran’s nuclear program remains within its sovereign rights. They also warned of broader regional consequences if European governments fail to reverse their stance.
Despite mounting tensions, Iran reiterated its willingness to continue talks but demanded that any negotiations be based on fairness and respect for mutual obligations.
