TEHRAN – Iran has vowed to block the establishment of a corridor linking Azerbaijan to its Nakhchivan exclave, warning that such a move would threaten regional stability and undermine its national security.
The proposed route, known as the Zangezur Corridor, would cut through Armenian territory near Iran’s border, connecting mainland Azerbaijan to Nakhchivan without passing through Iranian soil. Tehran views the plan as a geopolitical maneuver that could alter regional borders and marginalize its role in regional trade and transit.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian reiterated Tehran’s opposition, stressing that Iran would take “all necessary measures” to prevent the corridor’s creation. He also emphasized the importance of preserving Armenia’s territorial integrity and safeguarding the Iran-Armenia border.
The dispute comes amid heightened tensions in the South Caucasus following Azerbaijan’s victory in Nagorno-Karabakh last year. While Baku insists the corridor is part of the 2020 ceasefire agreement, Armenia disputes this interpretation, and Iran remains firmly opposed to any plan bypassing its territory.
