ISLAMABAD – Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Thursday categorically rejected rumours circulating on social media about President Asif Ali Zardari stepping down from office, terming them part of a malicious and baseless campaign aimed at sowing political instability.
Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Naqvi clarified that no discussion or suggestion had taken place regarding President Zardari’s resignation, and denied speculation about any ambitions by the military leadership to assume the presidency.
“There has been no talk, and no such idea exists, regarding the president being asked to resign. The COAS has no intention of assuming the role of President. All such claims are entirely false,” Naqvi stated.
Foreign Elements Behind Disinformation Alleged
The interior minister suggested that the rumours may be the work of hostile foreign elements seeking to damage the credibility of state institutions. He added that President Zardari himself is fully aware of who is behind these narratives and what their objectives are.
“I know who is spreading these lies, why they are doing it, and who benefits from it,” President Zardari was quoted as saying by the minister.
PPP Reaffirms Support and Rejects Speculation
The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) also strongly denied the rumours. Party Secretary-General Nayyar Hussain Bukhari emphasized that the PPP remains an integral part of the coalition government and that no constitutional or political move can take place without the party’s involvement.
Emphasis on Institutional Harmony
The government reiterated its commitment to preserving institutional harmony and national unity, particularly in the face of growing disinformation threats. Officials warned the public to avoid engaging with or spreading unverified claims that could disrupt the democratic process.
