DAVOS — International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva has acknowledged Pakistan’s ongoing economic reform efforts during a meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum, officials said on Wednesday, offering a rare note of reassurance amid the country’s challenging financial landscape.
According to official sources, the discussion focused on Pakistan’s macroeconomic situation, reform progress under IMF-supported programmes, and the government’s commitment to stabilising the economy through structural changes. Georgieva recognised the steps taken by Islamabad to improve fiscal discipline, control inflation, and strengthen economic governance.
Engagement at a Critical Juncture
The meeting took place as Pakistan continues to navigate a fragile recovery marked by tight fiscal conditions, high living costs, and pressure to sustain reforms agreed with international lenders. Officials said the prime minister briefed the IMF chief on measures aimed at broadening the tax base, reducing losses in state-owned enterprises, and ensuring energy sector sustainability.
Georgieva reportedly underscored the importance of maintaining reform momentum, noting that consistent implementation is key to restoring investor confidence and achieving long-term economic stability.
Reaffirming Cooperation
Government representatives described the exchange as constructive, highlighting Pakistan’s intention to remain engaged with the IMF and other international partners. They said continued cooperation would help strengthen foreign exchange reserves, improve financial credibility, and support growth-oriented policies.
The prime minister reiterated Pakistan’s resolve to pursue difficult but necessary reforms, while also emphasising the need to protect vulnerable segments of society through targeted social support.
Outlook Ahead
Analysts say public acknowledgment from the IMF leadership carries symbolic weight at a time when Pakistan is seeking to reassure global markets and development partners. While challenges remain, officials expressed hope that sustained engagement with the IMF will help anchor economic stability in the months ahead.
The meeting at Davos reflects Pakistan’s broader effort to project reform continuity and economic responsibility on the global stage.
