NEW YORK – Poland’s Iga Swiatek survived a major scare at the US Open, battling past Suzan Lamens in a tense three-set encounter to reach the third round, while defending champion Jannik Sinner and Japan’s Naomi Osaka eased through with convincing wins.
Swiatek, seeded second, started strongly by taking the first set comfortably but struggled in the second as Lamens found momentum. The world number two regained control in the deciding set, sealing the match with an ace and booking a clash against 29th seed Anna Kalinskaya in the next round.
On the men’s side, Italy’s Jannik Sinner produced a dominant display to defeat Alexei Popyrin in straight sets. The reigning champion now faces Canadian Denis Shapovalov in what promises to be a high-intensity contest.
Naomi Osaka, continuing her comeback, impressed with a commanding victory over Hailey Baptiste. Displaying power and confidence, the four-time Grand Slam champion showed signs of regaining top form as she advanced deeper into the draw.
The victories for Swiatek, Sinner, and Osaka underscored their strong positions as key contenders as the tournament heads into its decisive rounds.
