REYKJAVIK: A volcano on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula erupted once again early Wednesday, marking its ninth eruption since 2023, as lava fountains and smoke lit up the sky near the town of Grindavík.
The eruption began around 4 a.m. local time from the Sundhnúkur fissure, stretching over 2.4 kilometers. Another smaller 500-meter fissure also opened nearby, according to Iceland’s Meteorological Office.
Local authorities swiftly evacuated nearly 100 people from nearby areas, including tourists near the popular Blue Lagoon spa and nearby campsites. No casualties were reported.
Although the eruption looked intense, officials described it as small and not posing any immediate threat to major cities or air travel. Keflavík International Airport operations remain unaffected.
This marks the twelfth eruption in the Reykjanes Peninsula since 2021, as the once-dormant region continues to show signs of frequent volcanic activity due to its location on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
Authorities continue to monitor volcanic gases and air quality in surrounding areas, urging residents to stay indoors when necessary.
