ANCHORAGE – U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that his upcoming summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska carries a significant risk of failure, estimating a 25 percent chance that the talks may not succeed. He indicated that any substantive agreement on Ukraine would likely require a subsequent three-way meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The summit marks President Putin’s first visit to a Western nation since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, a conflict that has caused widespread destruction and humanitarian crises. Trump reiterated that no settlement could be reached without Ukraine’s participation, stressing that Kyiv must be involved in decisions affecting its sovereignty and future.
According to the Kremlin, the discussions will begin with a one-on-one meeting between Trump and Putin, accompanied only by interpreters, followed by broader talks over a working lunch. The summit is expected to conclude with a joint press briefing.
